The Letter from a “Friend” That Saved Me

by Christina L. Moreland

When I published my first book in 2013, I was immediately attacked by family members over a dispute regarding my grandparents’ very modest estate that I wasn’t even a part of. As a non-heir, the court battle that ensued should have just been between the six children, not a grand-child. I’ve since forgiven completely and moved on (which feels amazing!!), but this isn’t the point of the story…

Often when we embark on a dream or goal of any kind, ESPECIALLY if it’s to share our light with the world, we will get attacked. By people. By “friends.” By family. Or we simply aren’t understood, our dreams seem unachievable to others, and so those dreams don’t get supported or encouraged… i.e. we feel alone and isolated. While this may not seem as though it related to parenting or fitness in any way, it’s actually quite relevant because I almost wasn’t here in the public domain, helping moms with encouragement and motivation to reach their goals, because of this event.

I’ve had days when I literally had to pick myself off the floor to keep going, to keep believing, to keep dreaming that something I wanted to offer the world would be good, that it would take hold and be read, experienced, and appreciated… Today, I was looking for inspiration to share with you, and I was surprised to find this note I had written to myself on a really, really tough day. I became the friend, the believer, that I needed.

So today, I’m sharing this with you. Pretend your best friend is saying these things to do, because often, we tell ourselves the negative stuff, “I’m not good enough.” “I don’t think I can do it.” “I’m not THAT person.” The Mom Guilt we seem to think is a rite of passage can be suffocating. We tell ourselves the exact opposite that you would say to your best friend or your best friend would say to you…

INSTEAD, TELL YOURSELF THIS:
“Have the courage to dream.
Have the confidence to take action, and the desire to do what makes your Spirit happy. You can do anything!
You are amazing.
You taught me that, and now I have the benefit of living my dreams, because you showed me that I could — and I believed you.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!
And if it helps you to now this — I believe you can and you will.
So do!
Over the past couple of years I’ve seen you struggle, yet remain positive, supportive to others, and strong. You don’t realize what you can do, what you’re capable of, or what is coming yet, but I do.
So here are some inspiring quotes to remember when you’re having a bad day or need some extra encouragement — they are in the words of those more wise than I, yet hold the truth that I believe and hope for so deeply for you.”

“Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.” — Pamela Vaull Starr

“It is never too late to be what you might have been.” — George Eliot

“You see things; and say why? But I dream things that never were and I say, ‘why not?'” — George Bernard Shaw

Are you the friend you want to see in others? Have you ever been directly attacked when trying to leave a legacy with the world, or by sharing your unique gifts?

It might help to know we all go through this, but if we stay open-minded to positivity and BELIEVE, we can ACHIEVE. I believe we all have unique gifts and talents, and a divine Purpose. I wish you the best in finding yours.
